grants provide support to a variety of U.S.-based non-profit animal
welfare organizations through cash awards, sponsorships, executive and
technical assistance and training. Past grant recipients have received
funding for projects related to anti-cruelty efforts, emergency and
disaster response and preparedness, equine projects and shelter and
spay/neuter programs—check our website for current funding priorities.
The ASPCA does not accept unsolicited grant proposals by mail,
electronically or in any other format besides submitting a letter of
inquiry through its website.

Banfield Charitable Trust funds programs that help pets and their families stay together. We focus on programs that provide a direction solution to avoid surrender or separation of companion pets from families. We will consider equine programs as long as the program is designed to keep companion horse with their owners. We will fund veterinary care for financially-challenged companion pet owners and families, programs that help the vulnerable population (homeless, seriously ill, homebound, disabled, domestic abuse victims, military veterans, etc.) care for or keep their pets, companion pet food banks, education programs that directly relate to keeping companion pets and their people together, behavior modification programs to correct inappropriate companion pet behaviors so that pets may remain in the home, and disaster preparedness and response programs. We do not fund spay/neuter, fundraising campaigns, construction costs, or general administrative expenses.

The
Bernice Barbour Foundation supports the preservation and care of
animals and the prevention of cruelty to animals. The foundation
supports nonprofit organizations whose purpose is to benefit animals.
Hands-on projects are of special interest. To be considered for funding,
organizations must have completed at least one year of hands-on animal
care and must spay and neuter all animals before they leave the shelter.
Funding requests related to exotic animals, species not indigenous to
the United States, or land acquisition will not be considered. The
foundation does not fund government agencies, activism, litigation, or
indirect costs.

Workshop donates $1 from the sale of each 16" Bearemy's Kennel Pals
friend (plush dogs sold in their stores) to the Build-A-Bear Workshop
Bear Hugs Foundation to provide grants to animal shelters and animal
rescue and rehabilitation organizations. Requests should be made via the
online application. Grant applications will be reviewed quarterly and
awardees will be notified approximately 6–8 weeks after the grant
deadline. Grant recipients may reapply for a grant every other year.

The
DJ&T Foundation funds the spaying and neutering of dogs whose
owners cannot or will not otherwise take this precaution against
overpopulation. The foundation’s funds are aimed at this specific area
and they do NOT underwrite the neutering of dogs housed in your facility
or other shelters, nor do they fund the neutering of cats. The DJ&T
Foundation awards two types of grants: (1) Spay/ Neuter Clinic Grants
and (2) Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) Grants. Clinic Grants are
for the establishment of onsite or mobile surgical units, spay/neuter
transport vehicles and equipment for new and established clinics, etc.
SNAP Grants are reimbursement grants to underwrite low-cost and free
spay/neuter surgeries for people who cannot afford to have their dogs
spayed or neutered. Both grants require an emphasis on medium and large
dogs in high problem, "target" areas. Visit foundation website for

The
Edith J. Goode Residuary Trust supports the development of
organizational capacity for organizations incorporated for the
prevention of cruelty to animals. In particular, the trust supports
management and other training costs for shelter personnel. The trust
also gives special grants to explore innovative shelter ideas and
programs, including evaluation of outcomes. Grants are not provided for
lobbying, erecting permanent structures, or paying salaries.

The
Handsel Foundation gives grants to organizations in Oregon and
Washington State working to end companion animal cruelty and neglect.
Priority is given to organizations with targeted spay/neuter programs,
but the foundation also considers effective adoption and education
programs that address animal cruelty and neglect. The foundation focuses
on giving grants to organizations that do not receive wide public
support. Further, the foundation is particularly interested in funding
smaller animal welfare organizations and programs that have the
potential to be models for others working on behalf of companion
animals. Grants are restricted to organizations with annual budgets of
less than $1 million.

The
primary purpose of the Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust is to promote
the humane treatment of companion animals. Proposals related to wildlife
and other species may be considered. Eligible organizations will be
located in Ohio or other Great Lakes region states (including Western
Pennsylvania and Western New York). Of particular interest are programs
in the following areas: community spay/ neuter clinics, enhanced
adoption outreach and behavior training, shelter medicine, humane
education, continuing education for shelter staff and volunteers and
prevention of human-animal cruelty or violence. Please request our
guidelines and provide a query letter before submitting a full proposal.
All recipients must be nonprofit organizations with IRS 501(c)(3)
tax-exempt status.
Range: Most grants are from $2,500 to $25,000.
Deadlines: March 15 and Sept. 15 for Ohio; June 15 and Dec. 15 for other Great Lake states.

Maddie's
Fund is investing its resources in building community collaborations
where animal welfare organizations come together to develop successful
models of lifesaving; in veterinary colleges to help shelter medicine
become part of the veterinary curriculum; and in the implementation of a
national strategy to promote accountability and transparency in animal

The
Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant (administered by AHA) must be used
for construction, capital improvement, or equipment that increases
and/or improves the quality of care given to animals. The fund does not
provide for vehicles, operating expenses, or general maintenance and
upkeep. Recipients must be incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organizations that are current members of AHA at the Agency level.

PETCO Foundation’s mission is to raise the quality of life for pets and
people who love and need them. The Foundation was established in 1999
as a result of PETCO's continued hands-on involvement with animal
welfare agencies across the country. The Foundation has raised and
distributed more than $65 million. More than 6,500 local animal welfare
groups from around the country have received support from the
Foundation. Applicants should be local organizations. Priority is given
to those groups able to enlist the support of their local PETCO stores.

PetSmart
Charities, Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that
creates and supports programs that save the lives of homeless pets.
Targeted Spay/ Neuter and Free-Roaming Cat Spay/Neuter are two new U.S.
high impact grant programs that fund sustainable projects that will have
a significant, measureable impact on the pet overpopulation problem.
Most spay/neuter grants will range from $10,000 to $100,000. Applicants
must take a realistic look at what they think they can accomplish and
demonstrate they can conduct a program of the size for which they are
applying. PetSmart Charities also provides funding for emergency relief,
clinic equipment, in-store adoption and conference support, as well as
free educational opportunities via its Webinar program.

animal welfare and shelter organizations to become incorporated and
obtain 501(c)(3) status. Those grant recipients must use funds for costs
directly related to achieving these goals.

USDA Rural Development Housing and Community Facilities Program
The
USDA offers loans and grants for essential community facilities
(including municipal and private animal shelters) in communities with
populations under 20,000. Funds can be used to construct, enlarge or
improve facilities, purchase necessary equipment, etc. Priority is given
to organizations serving small and/or lowincome communities. For

The
William and Charlotte Parks Foundation for Animal Welfare provides
grants for humane programs, including grassroots activities or academic
studies in areas such as humane treatment of animals used in research
and education; research on euthanasia methods; humane treatment and
handling of animals raised for food; population control of companion
animals and so-called pest animals; and international projects to
improve conditions for animals. Awards may also be given for projects
that benefit animals, shelter construction or general operating costs.
Grants will not normally be awarded to improve animal health, assist
local spay/ neuter efforts, save endangered species, rehabilitate
wildlife or support political candidates.
