Genesee County Animal Control
Appointed by and under the general direction of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, the Chief Animal Control Officer develops and implements policies and procedures concerning the enforcement of regulations, ordinances, and related requirements regarding the control of animal activity and ownership throughout the County. Such policies and procedures, among other things, involve the protection of the public, rabies and similar controls, and the impoundment of stray and unwanted animals. Duties include the supervision of staff; monitoring accounts payable and an annual budget; overseeing communications with the public and County department heads and officials and veterinarians; preparing and conducting rabies clinics and other training; investigation of and response to resident complaints and, as appropriate, animal cruelty issues; selecting and maintaining supplies and equipment; conducting animal and license counts and assuring appropriate licensing (selling licenses as needed); and completing periodic animal-bite and other reports required by state and County authorities. A key responsibility will be to review in detail overall operations and make suggestions for improvements to the animal control function. The successful candidate will have the ability to cope with difficult and critical situations requiring timely decisions consistent with rules and policies. Moreover, he/she will be able to develop effective relationships with elected officials, department heads, and the public.
