Al-Van Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit located in a beautiful lakefront community in southwest Michigan. Our current Executive Director is retiring to enjoy the good life and take advantage of our area's natural beauty and recreational opportunities. We seek a dynamic and persuasive Executive Director who is strongly committed to the no-kill philosophy and ready to help lead the humane society in carrying out its mission "to compassionately serve the companion animals in our community by providing the best shelter, adoptive homes, education and resources available." The right candidate will guide our strategic direction, ensure our programs are useful and effective, develop sustainable financial support, and manage our human, financial and material resources effectively. Come inspire us. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors and works with the Board to develop and implement policies and programs to fulfill Al-Van's mission. The Executive Director is responsible for all shelter operations and activities; responsible for budget and financial management of the shelter; develops and implements shelter programs and services; supervises shelter staff and assigns and evaluates their work; serves as primary grant writer to develop funding sources to support shelter operations; and represents the shelter to our community. The ideal candidate will have a passion for companion animal welfare and a strong commitment to the no-kill philosophy. We require at least 3 to 5 years' experience in administrative, financial and staff management in a humane animal environment. Candidates with additional experience in management and public administration, and/or a Bachelor's Degree or higher with a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration and/or Animal Science are preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following qualities: * Exemplary customer service skills, including phone, written and public speaking. * Ability to be a team player while working independently and accepting overall responsibility for shelter management, operations and facility. * Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task. * Excellent oral and written communication skills, and ability to communicate effectively with Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, shelter customers, members of the public, the media, donors, and municipal officials. * Ability to network and build strategic alliances with other nonprofits, community and national organizations to advance the shelter's mission. * Experience with grant and proposal development and writing. * Familiarity with word processing, database, and spreadsheet software applications. * Knowledge of shelter administration and management to ensure high level of animal care and compliance with state and federal regulations and guidelines for non-profits and animal shelters. * Knowledge of personnel management, human resource practices, counseling, staff development, supervision and evaluation. * Understanding of basic accounting principles and ability to develop and manage budget, exhibit cash flow discipline, and operate within strict spending guidelines. Experience in managing a non-profit with limited resources is preferred. * Familiarity with purchasing and procurement. * Ability to oversee shelter facility and work with Board of Directors to ensure shelter facility is properly maintained. * Ability to bend, lift and reach is essential. Experience with appropriate animal restraint techniques and with handling animals in and out of cages, vehicles, and other facilities is preferred. * Must be able to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner. * Ability to work irregular hours as required by shelter programs, operational needs, and shelter customer needs.
