The Sacramento County Animal Shelter has a full-time opening for a Veterinarian. Work for a brand new state-of-the-art, LEED certified Animal Shelter! Our center is a 44,000sq ft open admission with an annual intake of 14,000 animals. Registered Veterinary Technicians assist the veterinarian in performing surgeries and performs other animal health care tasks in support of the animal hospital at the County Animal Shelter and in the mobile unit. Registered Veterinary Technicians are responsible for routine animal care and feeding, and also work with the public to promote positive outcomes for the animals through adoption, rescue, and foster programs. Under the indirect supervision of a Veterinarian, performs procedures such as: • Taking temperature, pulse and respiration • Administering pharmaceuticals such as medications and vaccines • Collecting and preparing blood, urine, and feces samples • Giving intramuscular, intravenous and subcutaneous injections Performs the following procedures under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian: • Preparing animals and assisting the Veterinarian with surgery • Applying casts or splints as necessary • Stapling or suturing existing skin incisions • Administering anesthesia induction by inhalation or intravenous injection • Performing dental extractions" • Renders emergency animal health care at the scene of an emergency • Performs euthanasia in accordance with established policies and California laws • Sterilizes and maintains all surgical packs • Performs routine cleaning and general maintenance of medical equipment, facilities and caging • Orders medical supplies • Impounds, quarantines and restrains animals as required • Examines animals and make referrals to Veterinarian as needed • Microchips animals • Orders, unloads, stores, and restocks medical supplies and related equipment • Provides post-surgical and treatment information to animal owners • Assigns and oversees medically related duties to volunteers and Animal Care Attendants • Participates in community events involving the Department • Maintains written records for the animal hospital Position Requirements: • Registration as a Registered Veterinarian Technician by the California Board of Examiners in Veterinarian Medicine. • Six (6) months of experience assisting a licensed veterinarian in providing medical treatment to animals, including surgical procedures and medical examinations, in a veterinary hospital or shelter clinic setting. • They must also have a positive work ethic and professional appearance at all times, good verbal and written communication skills, be detail oriented and organized, be able to multitask, be able to work independently as well as part of a team, and have basic computer skills. • Candidates should be comfortable working in an open admission shelter that is highly motivated to reduce euthanasia and increase adoptions. • Must be available and willing to work such weekends, holidays, overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs Full Time Employees receive Paid Time Off, Tuition Reimbursement, Health, Dental and Life Insurance, SCERS Retirement Plan, and voluntary Deferred Compensation Plan.
