The Alachua County Humane Society in Gainesville, Florida is seeking a veterinarian for our 501(c)(3) limited admission shelter. ACHS has led a successful decade-long Maddie’s Pet Rescue coalition in Alachua County and is on track to save 1,000 dogs and cats from euthanasia at our local county Shelter in 2013. We are proud that our community is on the road to being No-Kill by 2015 but our success is depends on a passionate and skilled veterinarian as part of our team. All of our adoption sterilization surgeries are performed in-house in addition to approximately 1,000 SNR/TNR community cat surgeries. Applicants should be able to complete 30-45 sterilizations per day on heavy surgery days. Salary is $50,000 plus a stipend for health insurance. We welcome your application! Primary Purpose and Function This position is responsible for the overall health and care of the ACHS shelter population. Primary duties include medical screening, vaccination, and surgical sterilization of animals placed in adoption, foster care, and SNR/TNR program; maintaining compliance with medical procedures, protocols and programs. This position reports to the Director of Operations. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities • Monitor the general health of shelter animals and insure proper medical care. • Supervise the intake of animals transferred or admitted to ACHS. • Conduct daily rounds and routine examinations of individual animals to identify existing and potential medical issues. • Perform surgeries and sterilization, as needed for animals in adoption and SNR/TNR program. • Maintain controlled substance records and renew license yearly. • Perform the duties of an animal care worker as needed. • Participate in meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues and share ideas to improve animal care. • Collaborate with Operations Director to develop long-range programs and regularly review policies and procedures. Knowledge and Skill Requirements • Ability to set achievable personal goals • Highly organized and able to efficiently manage personal time • Ability to work effectively with team members • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Proficient use of PetPoint Animal Management System • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications Education and Experience • Minimum requirements are a Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Medicine, current valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Florida, proof of liability insurance, and a current valid Florida Driver’s License. • Proficient in feline and canine high volume sterilization surgeries, including pediatric sterilizations • Veterinarian with 3-5 years of experience in an animal shelter environment desirable. Physical Demands • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time to perform surgery. • Ability to lift and restrain large dogs.
