Staff Veterinarian The Washington Humane Society (WHS) is seeking a skilled veterinarian who is passionate about saving the lives of animals to join our organization as Staff Veterinarian. WHS provides care and services for all animals of the District of Columbia as well as serving our community through a broad portfolio of programs including humane law enforcement, animal control, no-cost community cat TNR programs, wildlife rescue, pet retention programs and humane education. WHS is the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States, providing comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year through its wide range of programs and services. The Staff Veterinarian works with WHS’ Medical Director to provide sterilization services for shelter and public animals; to engage with our community through low-cost vaccine clinics; and to provide treatment and care to animals in our two shelters. The ideal candidate will be experienced in high-volume spay/neuter, have gone through focused shelter medicine veterinary programs, possess an excitement for providing care to animals in need; and a steadfast commitment to helping our organization reach its goals. Responsibilities: Contribute to WHS’ effort to reduce pet overpopulation in our region by performing sterilization surgeries for WHS animals as well as animals from other organizations in the region and for owned pets. Support WHS’ commitment to helping our community give their own pets the best care possible by providing basic health services and pet care education through our robust, low-cost vaccine clinics. Work as part of the medical team to keep animals healthy while in our shelters by providing appropriate and timely medical and surgical care to shelter and foster animals, following the SOPs developed by WHS Medical and Shelter Directors. Bring a spirit of continuous learning and a curious mind that is looking always for how WHS can continue to improve our operation to better serve the people and animals of our region. Help staff grow in their position and develop future leaders for our organization Act as a leader for more junior staff by always being professional and kind; honest and compassionate. Willingness to work with, oversee, and instruct pre-vet interns, veterinary externs, volunteers, and other veterinarians from our community Qualifications Must be able to perform a minimum of 30 spay/neuter surgeries per day. Proficiency in or willingness to learn sterilization procedures of rabbits. Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of constituencies including the (volunteer) Board of Directors, the staff, a volunteer workforce, current and potential donors, representatives of other animal protection organizations, private and public agencies, public officials, the press and private citizens. Must be able to train and assist in directing the activities of department staff and volunteers.
