Background and Qualifications

The HSUS is the nation’s largest animal protection organization, with more than nine million constituents. The HSUS was founded in 1954 to promote the humane treatment of animals and to foster respect, understanding, and compassion for all creatures. Today, our message of care and protection embraces not only the animal kingdom but also the Earth, its environment, and human inhabitants.

To achieve our goals, The HSUS works through legal, educational, legislative, and investigative means. The HSUS’s efforts in the United States are facilitated by our regional offices, and our global efforts are facilitated through our international arm, Humane Society International (HSI). Our program areas include humane education, animal control and sheltering, wildlife and habitat protection, farm animal welfare, and animal research issues.

The HSUS provides numerous programs and services directly to animal care and control agencies to help them better serve the animals in their care and their communities. The vast majority of our assistance to agencies is in the form of training and professional development, publications, and campaigns. The HSUS’s wide array of programs and services includes our Animal Services Consultation (ASC) program; Animal Care Expo, our annual educational conference and trade show; Animal Sheltering magazine, our bimonthly publication featuring the latest news and information in the animal sheltering field; Humane Society University, our training and education arm; AnimalSheltering.org, our comprehensive website; and Disaster Services, a premier resource for community disaster preparation, education, and emergency response.

The HSUS ASC program has performed comprehensive evaluations for a wide range of agencies, including some of the largest in the nation. Since 1999, our expertise in animal services management has helped both private and public animal care and control agencies in their desire to provide the most humane, responsive, and cost-effective services possible.
