Disaster Services

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) serves as a resource for animal-related and emergency management organizations and others concerned about the needs of animals before, during, and after disasters.

The HSUS recognizes that many shelters don’t have animal disaster plans in place and that even those with plans can sometimes be quickly overwhelmed during major disasters. With a network of regional offices and a nationwide response team, The HSUS can provide shelter professionals and other local authorities with the expertise and leadership necessary to coordinate animal response activities during a disaster, including animal rescue, provision of supplies, some financial assistance, and setup of temporary animal compounds.

The HSUS also has developed materials to help animal shelters and other local organizations prepare for disasters—both to plan for the survival of the animals in their care and to assist with the overall community disaster effort.

On the national level, The HSUS is the only animal protection organization that has formal agreements with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and The U.S. Department of Agriculture to promote disaster preparedness and response. We also have an agreement with the American Red Cross for community and personal preparedness.

For more information about disaster preparedness for your shelter and the community, visit the HSUS Disaster Center or contact your HSUS regional office.
