The HSUS Pets for Life® program has one very ambitious goal: to keep pets and their people together. Pets for Life recognizes that one of the greatest threats to pets is a lack of understanding on the part of caregivers—along with a lack of awareness of available resources. Through education and training, Pets for Life seeks to help solve the problems that endanger these relationships.
Pets for Life addresses the leading causes of pet relinquishment to animal shelters: behavior issues, rental housing restrictions, life changes attributed to moving or a new baby, human health concerns such as allergies and diseases that weaken the immune system, and commitment problems that stem from unrealistic expectations on the part of the animal's family.
If your shelter is dealing with any of the issues mentioned above, please visit humanesociety.org's pet pages and learn more about how we can help. The HSUS offers materials that can be downloaded and customized by animal care organizations so that they, in turn, can help families find solutions to problems that may threaten their relationships with their pets.
Through Humane Society University, you can participate in a series of online courses designed to teach you about improving or starting behavior services in your shelter.
