FEATURES

Dogfighting Investigations
State by state, city by city, the humane movement has made progress in combating dogfighting, but we have a long way to go before ending the crime that brutalizes thousands of pit bulls and other breeds every year. This feature section provides a look at the state of dogfighting in the United States, offers tips on working with police to investigate and prosecute dogfighters, and outlines the additional care that former fighting dogs require in the shelter.

The Great Beyond
While some communities debate the merits of mandatory spay/neuter laws and consider banning the declawing of cats, other areas in the world remain virtually untouched by modern veterinary medicine and progressive ideas about pet ownership. We bring you a look at programs that are making a difference in two of those places.

Go Spay It on the Mountain
The HSUS’s Jennifer Hobgood tells the story of the organization’s Rural Area Veterinary Services program, which brings vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, behavior advice, and much more to pet owners in underserved communities.

Helping the Animal Kingdom in the Kingdom of Bhutan
The locals call her “Dog Mother,” but Marianne Guillet doesn’t just help canines. Her tiny clinic in a remote Himalayan city nurses all kinds of animals back to health. Nancy Peterson of The HSUS visited Bhutan in 2005—and got a glimpse of how the other half lives.
