The Tragedies Are Daily—and Universal

I was very careful in talking to the media about what we were doing because I would never want anybody in our community to think these eight animals that we brought up are more special or more important than any of the animals we’re trying to help in our backyard. And I think that’s where a real ethical dilemma lies. Of course everybody got involved in Katrina and Rita on a national level, and the loss was devastating. But we’ve all got extraordinarily sad stories and horrific cases going on right in our own backyards—and animals that in their own right are incredible survivors. And … one [is not] more valuable than the other. But that still doesn’t mean that we can’t get together and help at least a little bit when something like this happens, and I just hope if something like this happens up in our area, we will of course get the same response from the rest of the country.

From an interview with Sharon Harvey, Executive Director, Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village in Russell Township, Ohio.
