Book Review: Captive Exotic Bird Care: A Guide for Shelters

(120 pages, spiral bound; $25, www.avianwelfare.org)

This new resource produced by the Avian Welfare Coalition, the Animal Protection Institute, and the ASPCA, is really for the birds—and those who care for them. Parrots and the like occasionally arrive at animal shelters as strays and owner surrenders, particularly in temperate climates where birds can survive for a while in the wild. By following the guide’s extensive advice, those used to caring for the canine and feline set can help out these less common avian visitors; chapters on housing and feeding, health, behavior, and placement and relinquishment issues make the book an ideal addition to shelter libraries.
