Adopting Great Adoption Practices

The most recent American Pet Products Manufacturers Association survey reported that 20 percent of pet owners have adopted their pets from shelters. We would all like to see this percentage continue to increase, and local organizations now have a new resource to help them in that endeavor: Great Dog Adoptions: A Guide for Shelters.

Written by dog trainer, speaker, and shelter operator Sue Sternberg, this well-written and easy-to-read book speaks your language and understands your challenges. It contains great suggestions on which programs to implement, how to implement them, and how to bring them all together in a way that helps with placement of behaviorally healthy animals into permanent, loving homes. Sternberg’s guidelines can also help your shelter become an even more respected community resource for professional advice and training.

“With every successful adoption, you are creating an advertisement for yet another shelter adoption,” she writes. “With every great adoption, you influence more people to think of your animal shelter as the premiere place to obtain their next dog.”

Great Dog Adoptions has been applauded by respected professionals in the animal sheltering field. Published by the Latham Foundation, the book sells for $18.50; visit www.latham.org and click on “Products and Services” for ordering information.
