DVD Helps New Owners Train Their Pooches
By Carrie Allan

… and you can offer it to adopters for free.

"We give a PetsIncredible DVD to each and every adopter. They are excellent, and our return rate has virtually been eliminated. These DVDs are a great resource for our staff and volunteers and our adopters LOVE them."
- Leigh Grady, Executive Director, Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling

Imagine if every bouncy, mouthy, barky, jumpy, hyper, occasionally indoor-peeing dog you adopted out came with his own free instructional training DVD, designed to help his new adoptive parents get over the humps of whatever problem behaviors he may exhibit.

Sound like a scenario from the Land of Happy Fairies and Benevolent Elves? It’s not. It’s here, it’s now, it’s real—and you can make it happen in your shelter for an astonishingly small cost. There are some benevolent “elves” involved, but they’re just plain folks—the good people of a company called PetsIncredible.

“Training Your Adopted Dog,” the DVD the company developed, is simple and fun. The training program is all based on positive reinforcement techniques and is designed for use by almost anyone in the family.

Various speakers and canine stars (including many mixed-breeds and adolescent pooches) take viewers through different training routines, helping them learn to teach their pooches not to jump, mouth, chew inappropriate objects, and eliminate indoors—in other words, teaching them to avoid all the behaviors commonly noted on intake forms as “reasons for surrender.” The DVD also deals with teaching basic manners and crate training.

Coming in Spring 2006, PetsIncredible will release their cat behavior DVD.

Here’s the best part: The PetsIncredible folks are well aware of the homeless animal problem. Several of the company’s staff, including director of shelter relations Traci Theis, are longtime shelter volunteers who wanted to do something to help dogs in shelters. The result is the “Shelter Helper Program,” which cuts a great deal for animal groups. While the training DVD will sell in pet supply stores for $29, PetsIncredible is offering it to animal shelters, animal control agencies, and placement groups for 99 cents—cheap enough that many shelters can afford to send a copy home free with every dog adopter. (Those that can’t afford the price might consider rolling the $1 cost into their adoption fees.)

More than 200 shelters signed up for the program at Animal Care Expo in April 2005, and over 500 are now participating. PetsIncredible distributed over 100,000 DVDs in their first 6 months and expects to distribute over 1 million DVDs this year. If you want to join the legions of PetsIncredible fans but would like to preview the DVD first, you can also take advantage of another offer: With a grant from The HSUS, the company is able to send out sample copies of the DVD for free.
