Think Puppy Mills Aren't a Shelter Problem? Think Again.

You may not have a puppy mill down the street from your shelter, but these mass dog-breeding facilities that sell puppies nationwide through pet stores, over the Internet, and in classified ads can still have a real impact on your shelter operations.

Puppy mill puppies are more likely to be ill or poorly socialized and are not likely to be spayed or neutered. Dogs kept for breeding in puppy mills are blatantly neglected and abused, and some of them (the “lucky ones”) eventually land at shelters when they are no longer wanted.

Look for an in-depth feature on the puppy mill problem and how it affects your shelter in an upcoming issue of Animal Sheltering magazine. Don’t get Animal Sheltering? Subscribe now!

Find out more about the issue, and about how you can help, at www.StopPuppyMills.org. Share your group's story if you’ve ever come to the aid of puppy mill dogs. Help spread the word that our best friends deserve better by ordering materials to distribute in your community. Read about The Humane Society of the United States’ Pet Store Challenge, a consumer action campaign that encourages citizens to find out where their community pet stores get the puppies they sell.
