Choosing the Right Needle Size

Question: Which needle sizes should our shelter keep in stock for administering vaccines, pre-euthanasia drugs, or sodium pentobarbital for euthanasia?

Answer: Choosing the right needle diameter and length is as important as selecting the right drug, choosing the right injection site, and handling the animal with compassion. A needle that’s too wide or too long could cause the animal pain during injection. A needle that’s too thin will require the person giving the injection to use more pressure, dramatically hinder injection speed, and, for intravenous (IV) injections, lengthen the time it takes for the drug to take effect.
