If the walls of your shelter could talk, they might say, “Paint me.” The shrubs might ask for a trim. The burned-out light bulb would holler for a replacement, and the faucet would tell you its steady drip is a cry for help.

You’ll get to all these tasks, you swear … but right now you’ve got to care for the animals.

Pressed for time and squeezed by limited budgets, shelter operators often face the challenge of fitting facility maintenance into mission-specific tasks such as cleaning cages and finding new homes for dogs and cats. Because its benefit to the animals isn’t always readily apparent, maintenance often slips to the bottom of the to-do list.
