105 Careers for Animal Lovers

When asked what they want to be when they grow up, many children answer, “A vet!” At that age, it’s an easy answer for a kid who loves animals—a veterinarian gets to care for animals all day. But even many adults who would like to begin work in the animal field or shift gears midway through their careers may not be aware of the dozens of other opportunities available.

A new publication by Paula Fitzsimmons, 105 Careers for Animal Lovers: For People Who Want to Express Their Passion for Animals through Meaningful Careers, offers ideas to those who want to spend their days doing more for animals than just bringing home the kibble.

The career ideas contained in the booklet are grouped by category and include descriptions of science careers, careers in education, and administrative positions, among other fields. The careers listed range from the more standard (veterinary assistant, wildlife rehabilitator, adoption counselor) to those that require starting a new business (cruelty-free product line, boarding service).

The book includes several possibilities that may not immediately come to mind when considering animal-related careers—such as grief counselor or creator of animal-related greeting cards. For the careers she lists, Fitzsimmons provides a brief job summary and points out which degree or qualifications might be required, along with contact information and websites that provide further information.

Copies of 105 Careers for Animal Lovers can be ordered for $8.95 each at www.pjpublications.com. Discounts are available for orders of four or more copies.

105 Careers also presents a fundraising opportunity for shelters and other animal organizations. For each copy sold by an organization that sells the book or advertises it in its newsletter or website (a special promotional code is provided), PJ Publications will donate a portion of the proceeds back to the organization. To find out more about how your organization can participate, call 608-288-9805 or e-mail paula@pjpublications.com.

The HSUS offers an animal careers book written specifically for children: Careers with Animals by Willow Ann Sirch (for grades 3 to 8). Careers with Animals is available for $16.95 at www.nahee.org. For bulk orders, contact Kathy Bauch at 301-258-3060.
