Portland tour highlights pet-friendly home remodelings

Like a lot of great ideas, this one came to Melissa Fryback while she was washing the dishes.

The Portland, Ore., marketing consultant knew that two of her clients—Anne and Richard DeWolf, owners of the design/remodel firm Arciform—were still grieving, months after the death of their Afghan hound, Salvador Dogi, on Christmas Day 2008. Fryback also knew their firm had done several remodeling projects featuring pet-friendly amenities. Recognizing that trend and seeking to honor a family dog who spent many days accompanying the staff at the Arciform office, Fryback hatched the idea for the Paws & Saws tour.

Held June 6, the event invited area residents to pay $35 to take a tour of six Portland houses that had recently been remodeled with pets in mind—say, by incorporating cat walks or dog baths into the renovation. Since the tour aimed to promote the idea of pets as members of the household, Fryback pitched it as a fundraiser for the Oregon Humane Society (OHS). Fryback and OHS corporate relations manager Jane Morrison are friends who had worked together on home tours as members of a historic preservation group. Morrison says she immediately liked the idea of a pet-related tour, and knew Fryback had “the knowledge and the horsepower” to pull it together.
