Thanksgiving, the day when Americans stay home and stuff ourselves silly in honor of our forebears, is rapidly approaching. And with that holiday comes The Day After Thanksgiving, better known to shopaholics as Black Friday. It’s traditionally the biggest sales day of the year, and retailers (especially in a slow economy) practically drool in anticipation of the hordes of plundering consumers who, they hope, will stampede into their establishments in search of hot deals.

For every shopper who plans to rise at the crack of dawn on Nov. 27, though, there’s at least one person who plans to avoid malls at all costs. And while you may not be able to lure hard-core consumers away from the bargains, you can capture plenty of the shopping-averse by celebrating Black Friday at your shelter; some shelters are learning to use the day of marketing madness as a day to market their adoptable animals.
