Cute canines don finery and strut beside human models to raise funds for shelter

They might call it a catwalk, but for at least one night, the place where leggy models typically capture the spotlight went to the dogs.

At the “Fur Couture Fashion Show,” a first-of-its-kind fundraiser for the Humane Society of Washington County in Hagerstown, Md., the venue wasn’t a billowing, white tent in Central Park, but the local hotel and convention center.

Jennifer Carbaugh, the hotel’s sales manager, hatched the idea of pairing volunteer models from the community with former shelter dogs to show off the latest threads for both species. She’d heard about a similar event that had been organized for a different animal shelter in the region, and she wanted to give it a try. “It’s for a great cause, and everybody needs help these days, especially nonprofits. We got our puppy from the humane society here, so I just wanted to help them,” Carbaugh says.

Better still, she proposed putting on the fundraiser at no expense to the shelter, with her employer providing the room, food, advertising, and all other costs. Her job is to promote the 108-room hotel and its 10,000 square feet of meeting space, and she says hosting the event was good publicity for the hotel.
