There’s lots of grant money to be had out there—but you’ll have to do some sniffing if you want to find it.

Nonprofit directors are on a first-name basis with them. Some shelters dedicate entire staff positions to creating them. But they cause dread in the hearts of many.

We’re talking about grants, of course— those chunks of “free” money that often don’t feel so free once you’ve poured weeks and months of blood, sweat, and tears into obtaining them.

But does grant writing have to be such a painful process? Is there an easier way for a nonprofit, particularly one that has never applied for a grant before, to navigate the complex grant writing system? How do you find a grant to apply for, and what steps should you take to start the process?

Applying for grants is not rocket science, and the money can be used for all sorts of lifesaving projects at shelters and rescues. Yet more than one organization has balked at taking the first steps in seeking out and applying for grants; the process and the paperwork can be intimidating.
