4:30 PM - 6:00 PM: Welcome Session
Join us for a warm welcome and State of the Animals overview by HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle, followed by an inspiring presentation by Dan Heath, co-author of Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard. Heath will explore why some big changes happen easily while many small changes prove impossible. The answer, he finds, hinges on some of the most fascinating findings in psychology. Building on this research, Heath will reveal a simple, 3-part framework that will help you change things in tough times, whether the change you seek is at work, at home, or in society. All of us have things we want to change—in our families, our businesses, and our communities. But where do you start? And don’t people resist change? In this talk, Heath explores some reliable ways to drive successful change—and they are techniques that you can start using today. Attendees will receive a copy of Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work, a new book co-authored by Dan Heath.

Tipping Point 2013 – Radically Rethinking our Response to Cats
Most shelters struggle to help cats and control their populations. Even in communities that have improved live outcomes for cats, cats rarely enjoy the same success rates as dogs. Why? Sheltering experts have taken a scientific look at cat populations and our nation’s sheltering practices to answer that question, and are proposing a radical change in thinking to achieve better outcomes for cats, shelters and communities. If you house cats, rescue cats, assist cat owners, specialize in TNR, or know someone in your community who does, you must attend this special session.
