Karen Patterson, MEd, CHES

Vice President of Humane Education and Volunteers, Humane Society of Huron Valley

Karen Patterson is a life-long animal lover who has a passion for education and animal welfare. Patterson holds a Master’s of Education degree in Humane Education as well as certified humane education specialist certification (C.H.E.S.) through the Humane Society of the United States. She developed and implemented HSHV’s humane education program which began in 2011 and also directs the volunteer department which serves over 2,500 adult and youth volunteers. She has ten years of formal teaching experience in the classroom and has since worked with students and teachers throughout Washtenaw County to integrate humane education into their daily lessons and curriculum. Through her work in both the humane education and volunteer departments, Patterson develops and designs trainings and programs that educate both youth and adults in the areas of animal welfare and environmental ethics. She also heads up HSHV’s formal advocacy program and is a board member for the Humane Education Coalition. Teaching others about showing kindness and compassion for both animals and humans is her passion in life and is the inspiration of her first published book, Harley Saves the Day. Karen lives in Michigan and is enjoying life with her son and four furry kids.
