Lisa LaFontaine

President and Chief Executive Officer, Humane Rescue Alliance

As CEO, Lisa led the merger of WHS/WARL to form HRA, the sole service provider for animal welfare, animal control and community programs in the nation’s capital. Through its merger with St. Hubert’s, HRA became the first regional, community-based, multi-state animal welfare organization in the country. Lisa has advocated for greater animal protection through strengthening laws for companion and wild animals, establishing safety-net programs to keep animals in homes, and embedding HRA in the diverse neighborhoods of DC. Through her tenure, the percentage of animals saved has risen from 28% to 92%. Previously she served as CEO of Monadnock Humane Society, leading a capital campaign to build of one of the nation’s earliest modern, animal-centric community centers. She left her communications career after a feral barn cat transformed the life of her daughter, who was living with Tourette’s Syndrome. Lisa served as the board chairman of the New England Federation of Humane Societies, the National Federation of Humane Societies, and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement. She and husband, Matt, share their home with Sazzy the half-mandibled pitbull, Tedward the chiweenie, Harold the failed community cat, and an ever-rotating cast of foster family members.
