Manager of Shelter Behavior Services, Animal Humane Society

Liv Hagen is the Manager of Shelter Behavior Services at the Animal Humane Society (AHS) in Golden Valley, MN. In her role she oversees all behavior programs, staff and volunteers that support animals in shelter that have come in with known behavior challenges or that develop behavior challenges during their time in shelter. Liv also oversees the shelter’s enrichment program and the Canine Prototype Habitat. Liv is working on the Prototype Habitat project with Dr. Graham Brayshaw, Maddie’s Fund and Dr. Lisa Gunter with the Canine Science Collaboratory at Arizona State University to do investigational studies on dog housing and enrichment. Liv earned her BS from the University of St. Thomas in 2011, MS from Johns Hopkins in 2019 and is a Fear Free Shelters graduate. Prior to working at AHS, Liv worked with marine mammals and large carnivores at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and Memphis Zoo. Liv has presented her work with advanced husbandry training with California sea lions at the International Marine Animal Trainer’s Conference. Liv has a few dogs, some cats, and a large backyard wildlife “feeding service” that keeps them all entertained.
