Animal Care Expo

After an exhaustive process of due diligence conversations and staff preparation efforts regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we have come to the difficult decision to cancel Animal Care Expo 2020 on May 6-9 in San Antonio, TX. We know this message is not the one many of you were hoping to receive. For others, it may be the challenging and difficult decision you hoped the HSUS might reach. Please know that all of you reading this message are in our thoughts.

Over the past weeks, we have heard from many of you. Your messages both to stay the course with the 2020 conference and those urging us to cancel, have all been read, shared, and heeded. Communing a large group of people has brought tremendous value to the animal welfare community, is a huge part of what Animal Care Expo has been, is, and will continue to be. You may have been planning for months to attend, and we are aware of how disappointing this news may be. HSUS is an organization that values people and animals. Our love and dedication to animal welfare and its hard-working professionals and volunteers is bound up in relationships, teaching and learning. When considering the factors before us, the well-being of the people and communities that have led us through 29 extraordinary conferences needed to be paramount in our decision-making.

So, it is with deep regret that we must make this unfortunate announcement and we invite you to read on and learn more about the decision to cancel and next steps below:

Conference cancellation

HSUS has worked to find ways to hold a large gathering safely, but the levels of risk to our conference attendees, family members, and all of our communities is simply too high. Our decision did consider the loss of the connections that would be made when meeting and networking in person and we share this sense of loss with you. but it is not possible to know how conditions might shift over the next weeks or months. HSUS determined that following the CDC’s recommendations not to gather in groups larger than 50 would be prudent and cancellation would be the most effective way to mitigate potential danger to our community.

HSUS asks for your support and patience as we work through the challenges of cancelling a conference and the details that come with it.

For individual/group registrants

We will be issuing a full refund equal to the amount you paid during the registration process. If you paid by credit card, your registration fees will be refunded to the credit card used during registration within 7 business days. Please note that if you registered a group, each group member’s fees will be refunded to your card in individual transactions. If you paid by check, we will need to process your refunds manually. We’ll be in touch with anyone who paid by check shortly with further details. If you have additional questions, please contact us at expo@humanesociety.org.

Please remember to cancel your hotel reservations as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary fees. If your hotel reservation was at the Marriott Rivercenter or Marriott Riverwalk your reservation have been automatically cancelled by the hotel. Please make sure you received a notification, if not please contact the hotel directly. If your reservations were at the La Quinta or Residence Inn, please reach out to them directly. Please cancel any other travel arrangements you have made. We ask for you to please be patient with our team as we work to refund everyone, it may take several days.

For exhibitors and sponsors

Please send an email to ReNae Vorgert (rvorgert@humanesociety.org) and request one of the following options for your exhibiting and sponsorship fees.

  1. Carry over the exhibitor and/or sponsorship fees for the 2020 conference to next year’s Animal Care Expo (2021). The price of this year’s exhibit space/s and sponsorship packages will cover the equivalent exhibit space or sponsorship level at our next conference, even if the price of the conference increases.
  2. Request a refund. Previous deadlines and fees for the cancellation of exhibitor space or sponsorship packages have been removed.
  3. Donate all or a portion of the amount paid for your 2020 exhibit space/s or sponsorship packages to HSUS. We will arrange for you to get the receipt necessary for tax purposes. We understand that some sponsors and exhibitors attend the conference with funds that only apply to this conference or come from restricted funding, so this option may not be feasible.

Please note, there is no need to email ReNae concerning your name badge registration to the conference. The Animal Care Expo registration manager will automatically cancel the complimentary registrations included in your exhibitor or sponsorship agreement of all exhibitor and sponsors. The registration manager will also issue refunds to any exhibitor or sponsor who purchased the discounted exhibitor registration. We ask for your patience with this part of the process as we work to refund everyone.

HSUS recognizes the centrality of our exhibitors and sponsors in the life of the conference and our organizational culture. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we organize this effort.
