As the goal of no-kill gets ever closer, an unavoidable truth emerges in the animal welfare world: dogs as a whole, are nearing the finish line faster than cats. In this talk, Jackson will discuss some reasons for this discrepancy and how to help overcome them; first and foremost within the rescue organizations and then, by extension, the communities they serve. Jackson will address how understanding the whole cat (their history, core behaviors, fears, and motivations) translates into application - from intake evaluation, living design, adoption placement, volunteer programs and community outreach. The ripple effects from understanding cats holistically cannot be understated: a paradigm shift from an animal welfare perspective means a giant step towards a no-kill reality.
