The Humane State Program (HSP) provides support to the shelter and rescue community on multiple levels. In Puerto Rico, more than 3,000 law enforcement officials have been trained in animal cruelty investigations. Humane education curriculum has launched in every public school, reaching 400,000 students. We’re also working on the island of Vieques to improve the lives of their world-reknowned wild horse population, and our global affiliate, Humane Society International, has launched an island-wide spay/neuter initiative.
In 2016, the HSP launched the Sister Shelter Project in Puerto Rico to provide shelters with “sister shelters” that provide direct mentorship and training; the project will soon expand stateside.
