Job Description


Under general supervision, performs investigations pertaining to animal bites, dangerous dogs, neglect, and other ordinance violations.

Examples of Duties

Enforce City of Detroit animal control ordinances (Chapter 6 of City Ordinances). Investigate complaints and comply with legal enforcement procedure and seizure of property and animals. Interview victims, witnesses and suspects in investigations. Research property and utility records to obtain accurate ownership identification. Issue citations and warnings and explain fees associated with licensing and fines. Document records and prepare reports with a computer software system. Prepare investigative reports that may be introduced as legal court evidence. Maintain legal chain-of-custody for evidentiary materials. Document evidence to produce warrants and partner with local law enforcement in the execution of search warrants. Testify in court on cases pertaining to violations of animal ordinances. Work with City Prosecutors in preparing cases. Develop and maintain positive communications and working relationships with City Departments, outside agencies and organizations, and law enforcement personnel. Maintain complete records of ongoing and closed investigations per Animal Control policy. Provide residents with education about animal regulations and humane animal care. Operate department issued vehicles, equipment, and communication devices, and report equipment damage. Other duties assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduation or G.E.D. Two (2) years of experience as an Animal Control or Law Enforcement Officer.
