SPCA Florida is looking for a new team member for the Foster Care Program. The Foster Caretaker helps with the care of SPCA Florida’s Foster animals, assuring proper and humane care of the shelter animals while in foster care. The Foster Caretaker will perform duties independently with minimal supervision, operating from specific and defined directions and instructions, all while advocating for SPCA Florida’s vision and mission of helping people and saving pets.

Essential Duties & Primary Job Functions:
• Assist in coordinating and completing animal intakes.
• Oversee, manage, and develop day-to-day tasks of the Foster Care Program.
• Provide excellent customer service to pet parents and potential fosters.
• Match foster families with appropriate foster animals based on their skills and situation.
• Assure that all foster volunteers receive the necessary training and support to perform their foster care responsibilities.
• Provide ongoing assistance, coaching, and moral support to foster families.
• Respond to emails and phone calls from pet and foster parents within a timely manner on workdays.
• Approve or deny foster applications in Adoption Center.
• Actively recruit new foster families.
• Maintain an organized, accessible list of foster families, availability, and contact information for all foster families.
• Maintain foster files and documentation of foster applications.
• Work directly with the Shelter Veterinarian and Director of Humane Programs to evaluate and identify animals that are candidates for the foster program.
• Work directly with the Shelter Veterinarian and Director of Humane Programs to determine appropriate medical treatment needed for foster animals.
• Report any foster family concerns to the appropriate staff member.
• Schedule vaccines and medication pickup as needed with foster families.
• Maintain and track supplies for foster program.
• Oversee pick up and return of foster animals into SPCA Florida.
• Assists the Director of Humane Programs with the employee reviews, interviews candidates for hire and coaches and mentors the Foster Team of three staff members.

Qualifications and Skills
• AA Degree required; 4-year degree preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience that is determined to be directly related to the specific requirements may be substituted. Prefer the completion of a two- or four-year veterinary technician program at an accredited college or university with computer training or experience.
• Any acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience in a supervisory role helpful.
• Ability to communicate with the public, colleagues, and staff in a professional, pleasant, courteous, tactful, and effective manner at all times.
• Must be able to work independently and be self-motivated.
• Must be in good physical and mental health and have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances with the help of fellow employees.
• Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems and disease symptoms, in addition to handling techniques is preferred but not required. Allergic condition which would be aggravated through exposure or contact with animals is a disqualification.
• Ability to learn various breed identifications of dogs, cats, other domestic and wild animals.
• The ability to deal with a diverse public on the telephone and in person is required.
• Ability to obtain Florida Euthanasia Certification.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• The ability to work compassionately with animals that may be fractious and possibly attempt to bite or scratch.
• Excellent organizational skills: ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Computer skills in a Windows environment preferred including Word, Excel, Power Point and Pet Point.
