Position: Director of Operations
Job Status: Exempt
Reports to: CEO until COO position is filled.

Summary:
Serves as member of the Executive Leadership team primarily responsible for all operational
departments including Adoptions, Foster Care, Population Management, Rescue, Animal Care,
Behavior and Community Cat Program. Assesses operational effectiveness and implements
measures to improve and enhance organizational operations. Ensures compliance with policies, data
reporting/analysis, and adherence to approved budgets.

Essential Duties and Functions:
 Direct reports include but are not limited to: Assistant Director of Operations, Adoptions Manager,
Foster Manager, Population & Rescue Manager, Animal Care Manager, Behavior Manager, and
Community Cat Manager.
 Works with the CEO and COO to establish goals, guidelines, staffing levels, protocols, and best
practices for operational areas.
 Plans, organizes, and oversees all day--to--day operations to ensure that tasks are completed to
coincide with the organization’s mission and goals.
 Leads staff discussions regarding placement decisions, legal issues, and animal-related decisions.
 Develops and maintains shelter statistics providing weekly and monthly reporting to staff, the
Executive Leadership team and CEO. Ensures accuracy of shelter records.
 Oversees the hiring and training of new staff and regularly reviews and evaluates job
performance. Responsible for assuring that proper policies and procedures are followed.
 Implements good leadership and team--building strategies to ensure a competent, committed and
productive team working in a supportive environment.
 Manages the shelter population and ensures shelter animals are moved through the system
efficiently and given a high quality of care including stress reduction, sociability, proper nutrition,
behavior modification, special needs, etc.
 Maintains positive, effective communications and relationships between staff, volunteers,
customers, community partners, and other animal welfare organizations.
 Analyzes statistical data to develop new strategies, and determine trends in the animal welfare
industry. Assists in developing strategies to increase adoptions, decrease length of stay and meet
organizational goals.
 Responds to complaints from customers, employees and volunteers and ensures staff is
communicating accurately and practicing good customer service. Diagnoses and develops viable
solutions to solve problems.
 Conducts staff meetings to review procedures, workplace issues and shares ideas to improve
any current issues within the organization.
 Reviews departmental budgets and sets the standard for strategic goals and objectives of
operations.
 Manages all protective custody animals in care and serves as the liaison with Albemarle and
Charlottesville Animal Control agencies.
 Assists the development department with grant tracking, information, and statistics as needed.
 Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
 Ability to lift and transport items weighing up to 65 pounds.
 Ability to handle animals effectively and humanely.
 Have a high level of manual dexterity.
 The ability to bend and squat.
 The ability to stand and sit for significant periods of time.
 Exposure to disinfectant solutions and zoonotic diseases.
 Subject to animal bites and scratches.
 Consistently exposed to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives
available.
 Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the organization. May require
evening, holiday and weekend work hours.

Qualifications:
 A four-year undergraduate college degree required.
 The ideal candidate must demonstrate a sincere commitment to the lifesaving philosophy and
operating model.
 Must possess excellent communications and project management skills.
 Must be able to safely and compassionately handle and work with all cats and dogs, including those
with medical and/or behavioral challenges.
 Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate a project with multiple and often
changing components.
 Must be highly motivated, with strong communication skills and a professional manner.
 Must have a strong knowledge of animal care giving with the ability to identify medical and behavioral
characteristics of dogs and cats.
 Computer literate: MS Office, Shelterbuddy, Internet, Google docs and email.
 Prior animal welfare management experience, preferably in a shelter environment.
 Proven leadership and management skills with at least 3--5 years of management of a team.
 Excellent skills in effective communication and conflict resolution.
 Ability to work on multiple tasks with interruptions in an energetic environment with the
pressure of periodic heavy workloads.
 Ability to anticipate and identify problems and needs and solve them and/or communicate
them appropriately.
 Ability to maintain a professional stance and preserve cordial, productive relationships while
maintaining confidentiality pertaining to privileged administrative and operational information.
 Valid Virginia Driver’s License required.
 Must be comfortable safely driving all SPCA transport vans and Compassionate Care-A-Van, abiding
by all traffic laws.
