Job Description

This role is responsible for the daily operations of Dorchester Paws facility, internal systems, policies & procedures, and the majority of the organization’s staff. This role provides leadership, oversight and long range planning to ensure all areas of shelter are operating at the highest standard possible. Serving as the conduit between admissions and adoptions, this person will be responsible for planning and implementation of humane action plans for all animals, and overseeing all aspects of the admission clinic.

Responsibilities:

  • Meets with the Executive Director to develop long-range programs and regularly review policies and procedures. Updates and implements SOPs as needed
  • Enforces all policies and protocols to protect the health and well-being of animals in our care, including supervising the cleaning program for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease
  • Oversees training throughout shelter; Conducts meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace issues. Share ideas of improvement
  • Oversees daily rounds to monitor animal health, manage animal inventory, and review space allocation; ensure plans for specific animal needs are being followed
  • Through use of PetPoint, maintains shelter records and statistics that include but are not limited to: animal population, adoption, euthanasia, and spay/neuter
  • Oversees the ordering and inventory of supplies and equipment and assures that appropriate quantities of all supplies are on a hand at all times. Regularly researches new products and pricing
  • Oversees the operations of the surgery suite ensuring the most effective use of limited resources
  • Review and present documentation of progress and achievements for monthly Board meetings
  • Ensures movement of animals through managing intake, keeping animal flow efficient but individualized based on the animal’s needs
  • Provide oversight of the medical care and response to treatment of all animals
  • Run diagnostic test, and triage for the veterinarian as needed with good ability to communicate and understand the condition and needs of a diverse medical emergency
  • In conjunction with the Veterinary staff implement and communicate medical treatments and diagnostics

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and/or 5 years of relevant experience
  • Minimum of 3 years management experience, preferably within an organization of 20+
  • Must be willing and able to work a weekend and/or a rotating schedule
  • Must be familiar and have experience with clinical techniques, uses of veterinary drugs, instruments, and equipment
  • Must be physically capable of performing moderately heavy work
  • Must have ability to evaluate problems accurately and display sound judgment when working without supervision and under emotional stress
  • Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques required
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and motivational skills as well as the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks at once
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a genuine desire to model and facilitate productive communication in the workplace
