Job Description

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County Inc., (ARL) a registered 501(c)3 non-profit, charitable organization, is seeking an Executive Director. The ARL is located on 10 acres in Berks County, PA, near the city of Reading. The ARL is an open admission, no-kill shelter, receiving approximately 6000 animals annually, with an annual operating budget of 2.2 million dollars and a staff of 45. In addition to taking in strays and unwanted animals, the ARL offers animal control and humane officer services to Berks County. Position Summary The Executive Director is responsible for directing the day-to-day operation of the interests and facilities within the framework of policy and authority established by the Board of Directors, including but not limited to public relations, personnel management, liaison with government and civic organizations, financial management, planning, organizing and developing programs that will meet the principles and objectives of the organization. ARL History The history of the ARL dates back to 1952 when its founder, Mary Archer, a Berks County socialite and lifelong activist for animal welfare, founded the Animal Rescue League because of her concern for the humane treatment of animals in Berks County. Over the years, the organization has grown its programs and services significantly to address the needs of the community and is the largest shelter in Berks County. Over the past year, the ARL has committed to becoming a progressive, no-kill shelter and has proudly taken its live release rates for dogs from 87% to 95% and from 45% to 85% for cats. In the fall of 2018, the organization went through a comprehensive organizational restructure significantly increasing staffing levels, which greatly enhanced the quality of care provided to the animals and customer service to the community. Additionally, the organization rolled out it's own TNR program, established an offsite adoption center, successfully implemented a working cat program, introduced a dog behavior program, opened an admissions center/pet retention program and migrated to an open adoption program. As a result of these achievements, the ARL was recognized in 2018 by local media as well as nationally by the Best Friends Animal Society. Position Qualifications We are seeking a seasoned and passionate animal welfare professional who will be committed to moving the organization forward with its Mission to the Berks County community. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of industry experience and will have previously served as an Executive Director or Assistant Director in an animal welfare organization. A BA/BS is required.
