Summary: The Sanctuary Groomer supports Best Friends Animal Society's lifesaving objectives by ensuring animals in our care (primarily dogs, cats, and rabbits) are groomed for health, well-being, and presentation to potential adopters.

The Sanctuary groomer is responsible for coordinating workflows and daily scheduling related to all aspects of grooming. The groomer will work with staff and volunteers to educate and increase knowledge and skills such as nail trimming, recommended grooming tools, etc. While this role includes responsibilities in multiple areas at the Sanctuary, the groomer may receive intensive assignments in a particular program or area, based on organizational needs.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Coordinate and facilitate an effective grooming schedule to provide timely grooming, prioritizing the work based on specific needs of an animal and to promote positive outcomes.
Support adoptions and transfers by demonstrating flexibility in scheduling to accommodate animals highlighted for adoption, pending adoption and scheduled for transfer to another facility.
Work with animal care staff to create a positive experience for each animal and to document information that may be helpful or beneficial to future experiences.
Support adoptions by efficient workflow, promoting animals via social media and other avenues, providing information to staff and potential adopters, assisting with the adoption process as needed.

Responsible for ensuring a variety of animals maintain healthy skin and coats, identify specific needs for individual animals.
Ensure that each animal has a safe experience that allows them to develop confidence in similar situations.
This position requires the groomer to work with animals that have significant behavioral challenges (under socialized, fearful, aggressive) and medical challenges (including a variety of zoonotic diseases).
Provide medical baths and treatments as prescribed; schedule and assist with sedate and grooms as needed.
Provide training and guidance for team members and volunteers to ensure that the grooming needs of each animal is met and maintained between grooming appointments.

Deliver superior customer service and relate to all staff, visitors, adopters, fosters and transfer partners in a friendly, informative and professional manner.
Work collaboratively, and with a positive attitude, with all Best Friends' department teams for the care, benefit, promotion and ultimate outcome of all animals in our care.
Develop workflow efficiencies and identify opportunities for improvements relating to grooming.
Maintain grooming facilities and equipment; request supplies as needed.
Follow Best Friends policies, procedures, and task lists for daily lifesaving outcome assignments; including accurate and timely communications, work completion, data entry, and recordkeeping.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:
A minimum of one-year grooming experience.
Ability to work with and handle a variety of species including those with health and/or behavior conditions/concerns; ability to identify and speak to medical and behavioral characteristics.
Customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues; familiarity and comfort with an open adoption process.
Resourceful, get-it-done attitude; initiative to assist in any area or process; problem solving, seeking answers independently and enthusiastically; flexibility.
Strong interpersonal skills, a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along with people from different backgrounds.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with well-developed organization skills to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office products; familiarity with shelter software (Best Friends uses Shelterluv), or desire to learn.

Physical & Other Requirements:
Must be able to:
Routinely lift 65 pounds and perform daily strenuous activity including, but not limited to lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, cleaning, and bending.
Work for extended periods of time standing and using repetitive arm and hand motions.
Daily exposure to dogs, cats and other animals of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status.
Daily hours and days of the week may vary according to the needs of the department schedule; position includes weekends, nights and holiday work.
