Job Description

As a managed admission animal care and adoption facility, ARL focuses on meeting people and animals where they are, bringing veterinary and wellness services directly to those who need it most, so that animals are safe and healthy living in communities and out of shelters. ARL provides outstanding veterinary care, adoption, dog training, community veterinary services and field services. They also confront the root causes of animal cruelty and neglect through special police investigations and advocacy aimed at strengthening the laws that protect animals. ARL is one of only two animal welfare agencies in Massachusetts with Special State Police Powers to investigate and bring charges on animal cruelty. The operating budget is approximately $12M and a 16-member Board of Directors governs the organization.

Reporting to the President, the Vice President of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Services provides strategic leadership and management oversight to all current and future animal and community welfare and veterinary programs. S/he will develop new programs and ensure the effective operation of current programs and services, including animal care and operations, law enforcement, field services, community programs, community and shelter medicine, volunteer and foster programs and the Boston Veterinary Care clinic. The Vice President will lead the development of policies and operating procedures including the practice of sound veterinary medicine and animal care standards.

The Vice President will manage and provide direct supervision, guidance and mentorship to a team of five direct reports, specifically: the Director of Law Enforcement, Director of Community Programs, Director of Animal Care and Operations, Medical Director of Boston Veterinary Care, and the Senior Veterinarian for Community and Shelter Medicine. The position is responsible for a total staff of 60 and a budget of $8 million.
We are seeking a dynamic, strategic and experienced leader and manager with a track record of innovative and inclusive leadership. Demonstrated accomplishments in shelter operations, veterinary services, personnel management, and financial oversight are needed. An unwavering commitment to, and understanding of, open admission sheltering is required. The ideal candidate will bring strong and successful leadership as a Director or Senior Manager of a humane society/animal control agency.

A Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university is strongly preferred, MBA desired. A minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible leadership, management, and supervisory experience is required. DVM degree or related advanced degree in medical sciences, with at least ten years’ experience as a practicing Veterinarian, is preferred. Ideal candidates will have, or be willing to obtain, a valid Massachusetts license to practice Veterinary Medicine. Evidence of a passionate commitment to the proper care of all animals and safety conscious demeanor is strongly needed. CAWA designation is helpful. Computer literacy required, experience with Microsoft Office preferred.
