Herd of horses

Each year, tens of thousands of American horses—former riding horses, racehorses and even wild horses—are purchased at auction, loaded onto over-crowded trailers and shipped to slaughter plants outside the U.S. for human consumption abroad. The majority are young, healthy animals; often, slaughter plant buyers outbid families and rescue groups who want to give these horses new, loving homes. The HSUS leads the fight to shut down this brutal industry by urging Congress to enact a federal ban on both the domestic and foreign slaughter of American horses, educating the public about the cruelty of the slaughter system and supporting programs that aid at-risk horses.
