Despite its national and international scope, modern horse racing is still being conducted under outdated state-by-state drug and medication rules. This endangers the horses and allows unscrupulous owners and trainers to simply move the animals to a jurisdiction with fewer restrictions to continue doping and avoid penalties. It’s clear that when it comes to medication, the horse racing industry can’t both promote and police the sport. We are working with leaders in the industry to lobby for the passage of federal legislation that would require uniform medication reform for all racing breeds. We support responsibly retiring and repurposing racehorses at the end of their careers and believe that the industry and owners need to provide a better safety net for these equine athletes.
