Job Description

Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab, located in beautiful Moab, Utah, is seeking a certified veterinary technician with experience in surgical field clinics. Experience in emergency and/or shelter medicine is a plus! The successful candidate will run the surgery side of a field clinic.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Attending one surgery clinic a month on the Navajo Nation - 3 days
Ensuring that the veterinary staff is trained with our equipment and is available to assist the surgery team with questions, concerns and emergencies throughout the clinic
Helps manage the surgery flow throughout the clinic from check in, to induction, surgery, recovery and discharge
Is comfortable communicating and training volunteers in different areas of the clinic (recovery, sterilization, surgical assistance, etc.)
Is comfortable troubleshooting anesthesia machines, oxygen equipment and sterilization equipment
Perform pre-surgical patient examinations
Triage and initiate emergency stabilization and with indirect supervision from veterinarian
Responsibilities outside of the clinic will include:
Ordering clinic supplies
Managing the surgery waitlist
Scheduling surgery appointments
Managing post-operative patient concerns
Unpacks and packs the mobile clinic
Drives the mobile clinic to field locations
Assisting with animal care and treatments at our shelter facility


General skill requirements:
Good understanding of disease management in an area of a highly unvaccinated animal population
Ability to keep accurate medical records in online clinic and shelter management programs
Have a solid understanding of medical terminology
Ability to triage medical cases quickly and appropriately
Work effectively with individuals and colleagues from diverse communities and cultures.
Professionally conduct oneself even when stressed or focused on individual tasks.
Know common drugs and protocols
Patient restraint
Be familiar with principles of Fear Free animal handling
Calculate, administer and properly manage fluids and medications
Perform venipunctures and place IV catheters
Prep wounds and apply bandages
Monitor vital signs
Properly place an endotracheal tube
Care for common urgent cases, including wound management, ear infections, and euthanasia
Induce and maintain anesthesia
Ability to multi-task in a hands-on environment
Must be able to lift 50# alone, or more with a team member
Facility maintenance
Handling and documenting controlled substances and knowledge of policies related to such
Experience with dogs and cats of all sizes, temperaments, and medical status
Ability to explain treatments to clients
Patient discharge and client education
Maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment
Perform routine, in-house diagnostic tests


You:
Possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to travel, including overnight stays
Can work flexible hours outside of 3 clinic days per month
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills
Are able to multi-task, be self-motivated and pay close attention to detail
Are a great team member or able to work autonomously
Work with a sense of urgency and possess critical thinking skills
Can identify patient distress and react appropriately
Thrive in a fast-paced environment and remain cool under pressure
Are comfortable doing patient assessments and procedures with little or no supervision
Have great organizational skills
Bring a positive attitude to work and promote the same in others
