Job Description

Under the direction of the Medical Director in all activities and responsibilities, the St. George Clinic Veterinarian provides high-quality medical care to patients in the clinic including foster and hospice animals, as well as outpatient management for special medical cases.
• Practice veterinary medicine within a high volume shelter setting, striving to provide the best possible care on both a herd health and individual level while being mindful of limited resources while at the same time .
• Provide emergency care for community animals on-site.
• Provide high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter for community animals.
• Perform soft tissue surgeries as needed for community animals.
• Perform dentals on community animals.
• Assist in the establishment and maintenance of procedures and protocols such as disease control, intake, and quarantine.
• Perform euthanasia when needed.
• Coordinate, when needed, specialized surgeries and consultations with outside veterinarians.
• Ensure that all state and federal laws, state regulations, and accepted standards regarding clinic operations, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling are adhered to.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of animal health protocols, surgical procedures and companion animal health issues.
• Build effective relationships through positive interaction and communication with the community, volunteers and staff.
• Attend all staff meetings and training sessions.
• Advocate the humane treatment of animals and be able to transmit these values to others.
• Always strive to work with the 5 freedoms of animal welfare in mind:
• Freedom from hunger or thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
• Freedom from discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
• Freedom from pain, injury or disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.
• Freedom to express (most) normal behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind.
• Freedom from fear and distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
• Provide the Clinic staff with ongoing supervision, mentoring and continuing education so that they are able to properly and skillfully complete their job requirements.
• Treat all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance; promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals at all times.
• Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, managers, executive staff, community pet owners and other stakeholders.
• Cheerfully acknowledge the presence of customers in all public areas, and interacting with the public in a polite, professional, nonjudgmental manner at all times.
• Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Medical Director.
